BREAKING: Car hits people at Charlottesville rally – 'one dead' several injured

Horror footage has emerged online of the moments after the car smashed into people.

Early reports have said there are many with serious injuries.

The mayor of Charlottesville has reported one death.

Mayor Mike Signer tweeted: “I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here. I urge all people of good will–go home.”

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told Fox News three vehicles crashed causing injuries, ranging from life-threatening to minor.

In the video a grey coloured car can be seen reversing at high speed after the horror incident.

A chaotic scene has now erupted as the injured are treated in the street.

White supremacists have clashed with anti-Nazi group in the state of Virginia for the last two days.

Virginia’s governor declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville as horrendous fights broke out.

The violence started on Friday, before  Saturday’s “Unite the Right” rally.

Men have attacked women and the Confederate flag flown by right wing protesters. 

Several hundred protesters were marching in a long line when a car drove into them.

Nationalists were holding the rally to protest plans by the city of Charlottesville to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have called for peace.

Trump said Saturday on Twitter: “Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let’s communicate w/o hate in our hearts. No good comes from violence.”

Marchers are now being advised to leave as police battle to rid them from the area.

Donald Trump called for calm in a security conference after the first death was revealed.

He said: “We must love each other, respect each other and cherish our history and our future.”
