ECLIPSE LIVE: America witnesses once-in-150 years super blood moon eclipse RIGHT NOW

While a lunar eclipse is not so rare in itself, the fact that it is combined with a blue moon and a supermoon make this a once in a lifetime viewing.

The last time there was a super blue blood moon eclipse was 150 years ago in 1866, when Andrew Johnson was serving as the President of the United States following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.

Skywatchers on the US’s west coast will have the best views of the eclipse, with NASA confirming that residents of Hawaii, Alaska and California all the way up to western Canada should be able to see the entire display, weather permitting.

Gordon Johnston, NASA program executive and lunar blogger, said: “For the continental US, the viewing will be best in the west. Set your alarm early and go out and take a look.”

The super blue moon eclipse will enter its umbral stage at 3.48am PT – where the moon starts moving into the Earth’s shadow – and reach totality at 4.51am.

Totality will last a full 1 hour and 14 minutes, ending at 6.05am, leaving plenty of time to take in the breathtaking views.

Mr Johnston continued: “Unfortunately, eclipse viewing will be more challenging in the eastern time zone.

“The eclipse begins at 5.51am ET, as the Moon is about to set in the western sky, and the sky is getting lighter in the east.”

The moon appears with a red twinge over America as, when it is behind our planet, the Earth’s atmosphere bends the light, giving it the blood-like colour – hence the name blood moon.

It is also given the name blue moon – which is the technical term given to a total lunar eclipse that involves the second full moon in a month.

The first full moon took place in the first few days of 2018.

Some conspiracy theorists believe that the eclipse could trigger massive earthquakes and volcanos around the globe due to the gravitational pull.

Website Kicker Daily News says: “During a Blood Moon event, in other words, a Lunar Eclipse (the Earth is between the sun and the moon)… try to imagine if you are the Earth, and you are being pulled by strong forces (Sun and Moon) from opposite directions.

“If you are a magma-carrying body or let’s say a balloon and you are being pulled, your ‘skin’ would be distorted, or moved (earthquake) and the precious magma inside you would escape from exit spots (volcanic eruption).”

Some Christians have even linked it to the end of the world.

Followers of Christ point to a verse in Luke 21:25-26, which says the end is near when the signs appear.

The lunar phenomenon is a once in a lifetime event

According to the verse, Christ says: “And there will be signs in Sun and Moon and stars, and on the Earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”

Wesley Baines of Christian site belief.net said: “Whatever the case, when the sky darkens and the stars disappear and the moon becomes red as blood, you will know that Christ is near.”

Twitter was awash with pictures and thoughts in light of the remarkable moon event.

Edward Lawrence said: “Go outside of you are up.. right now you can see the lunar eclipse or partial eclipse, depending on where you are. It’s a Super Blue Blood Moon.”

Tish Millard added: “We’ve been up since 3.30am, just off out with the Telescope to #ElkIsland to see what we can see! Am Super, Excited Pants!”

And BuffyResists tweeted: “1 hr, 48 minutes to go….#BlueMoon  #BloodMoon  Get your looks in. Next one a Loooong way off!”
