Emily Thornberry takes SHOCKING dig at Rees-Mogg before admitting he could be next leader

The shadow foreign secretary took a huge dig at the Conservative MP for North East Somerset as she admitted he could be the next Tory leader.

During her appearance on Channel 4’s The Last Leg, Ms Thornberry suggested Mr Rees-Mogg was outdated.

Host Adam Hills began the exchange by asking what the Labour frontbencher thought of Mr Rees-Mogg.

He said: “It’s only recently that he has come into public prominence. Is it possible he was frozen 60 years ago and somebody has only just thawed him out?

“What are your thoughts on him?”

The Labour shadow foreign minister then continued the joke adding that was “from the 18th century”.

She said: “I don’t understand the Tory party.

“I keep thinking about it and trying to work out what they are up to and I just don’t and it just doesn’t make any sense.

“There is one thing. Once goes then once the MPs who are the gatekeepers put him forward as a candidate, the people who will be voting for him will be over 75 and will be a very small group of people.

“So he has a very good chance of being the next Tory leader.

“I am cool with that, I am fine with that. If they want to have a leader from the 18th century that is absolutely fine with the Labour Party. Good luck to him.”

The comments come after Mr Rees-Mogg this week delivered a Daily Express petition to the Prime Minister to cut foreign aid.

The Brexiteer was seen banging on the door of Number 10 after more than 100,000 readers demanded Britain’s foreign aid budget was cut.

After stunning reporters with his appearance, the Tory MP said: “It was a petition of Daily Express readers who want to ensure the foreign aid budget is properly spent and are not in favour – as I’m not in favour – of the 0.7 percent target.”
