Morrissey cancels US gig due to 'ill health'

Morrissey has cancelled a sold-out show in San Antonio, Texas, following health issues.

A statement posted by the Tobin Centre for the Performing Arts announced Wednesday’s show had been cancelled and fans would be refunded.

It went on: “Following health concerns stemming from Morrissey’s appearance in Tucson, it is with great sadness that tonight’s sold out engagement in San Antonio at the Tobin Centre is cancelled to allow him to fully recuperate.”

The former Smiths star revealed in 2014 he had throat cancer and said in an interview last year the treatment was “slowing” him down.

Earlier in the week the 57-year-old singer walked off stage mid-performance in Tucson, Arizona, after singing just six songs and being on stage for around half an hour.

Fans were left hanging on Monday when the singer stopped singing Everyday Is Like Sunday and left the stage.

At the beginning of the show he had told fans “I left part of my mouth” in Guadalajara, Mexico – a city that he performed at earlier this month.

He went on: “But I will stand here and I will sing and, if necessary, I will drop dead.”

After Morrissey’s departure, his keyboardist Gustavo Manzur – who himself had to cancel several gigs last year after collapsing backstage – disappeared to find out what was going on.

He returned and apologetically told the crowd: “His voice is shot. You heard it, you heard it. He’s been trying, trying really hard.

“He came out, he tried. His voice is really shot. We’re sorry. He’s sorry. You know he tried.”

Morrissey also took the unusual step of ranking his audiences around the world, with two US cities topping the 15 strong chart, and his hometown Manchester taking eight spot.
