Speaking exclusively to, Lord Owen said: “Plymouth was 60/40 out. I was born in Plymouth. That was my constituency for 26 years.

“When I went back, I spent a couple of hours on a spring afternoon on a bench in the main part of the city. Within 25 minutes I could tell.

“And they never said Leave or Remain – it was always out, out, out.

“It was as if they had made up their minds almost years ago.”

In January, Brexiteer MP Theresa Villiers warned compromising on will not respect the vote of the British people.

Ms Villiers said the UK is at risk of a “diluted Brexit” which would “sell out” the British people’s decision to leave the European Union.

The former Northern Ireland Secretary Villiers told the : “We have made compromises. I accept the need for that.

“But I think there is only so far you can go before ultimately you find yourself in a position where you are diluting Brexit so much that it isn’t leaving the European Union in a real sense.”

Prime Minister Theresa May stood by the comments as she issued a stern message to the EU during a key Brexit speech on Friday, demanding the bloc needs to listen to the “hard facts” and understand Britain will not accept an off-the-shelf Brexit deal.

Mrs May said existing models such as Norway and the Canada style deal do not provide the best options for the UK or the EU.

The Prime Minister also slammed the EU’s calls for Britain to not “cherry pick” at a Brexit deal. She said: “The fact is that every free trade agreement has varying market access depending on the respective interests of the countries involved.

“If this is cherry-picking, then every trade arrangement is cherry-picking.”
