Police officer assaulted as city centre brawl prompts chaos for Christmas shoppers

Onlookers were left stunned by the “madness” unfolding in front of them on a street full of Christmas shoppers.

About eight police cars were at the scene and around 20 officers were on hand to restore order, according to local reports.

One witness said: “I think it was a fight, think it was a couple of girls and then more people got involved.”

Another witness added: “It was a fight between two girls. There was a load of teenagers.

“Then one girls’ group of friends came along and they were banging one girl. Then all these police came. They took one girl away.”

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to Market Place at about 3.50pm after a report of a public order incident.”

She added that an officer had been assaulted and had sustained minor injuries during the incident.

A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in police custody.

Shops have reportedly been advised to close early following the disturbance.
