Toronto attack video: Suspect in GUN STANDOFF with HEROIC police before dramatic TAKEDOWN

A white rental van plowed into a crowd, killing nine people and injuring 16 along a mile-long stretch of busy Toronto pavement during lunch hour on a sunny Monday afternoon, police revealed.

Officials declined to answer questions about what motivated the driver to steer his vehicle toward people just before 1:30pm (1730 GMT).

At least one witness described the driver as appearing to deliberately target victims on his roughly mile-long (1.6 km-long) rampage, according to media reports.

Toronto Deputy Chief Peter Yuen said: “This is going to be a long investigation.”

Canada’s public safety minister, Ralph Goodale, declined to comment on what may have motivated the attack.

He said: ”The investigation is at a stage where no further information can be confirmed at this point.

“The police are conducting obviously their thorough investigation to determine what happened and why it happened, the motivations involved.”

A witness said: “This person was intentionally doing this, he was killing everybody.

“He kept going, he kept going. People were getting hit, one after another.”

He said a number of the victims were older people and at one point he saw a pram fly into the air.

Police have offered no details on the driver’s age, gender or possible motive.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a brief statement Monday afternoon in response to the incident.

He said: “We’re just learning about the situation in Toronto now. Our hearts go out to anyone affected.

“Obviously we’re going to have more to learn and more to say in the coming hours.”

Ryder System Inc spokeswoman Claudia Panfil confirmed that one of the company’s rental vehicles had been involved and said the company was cooperating with authorities.

A spokesman for Ryder, said: “Ryder is aware of an incident involving a Ryder rental van striking pedestrians in Toronto.

“We are saddened by this tragic event, and our deepest sympathies go out to those impacted.

“We take the safety and security related to the use of our entire fleet very seriously and we are fully cooperating with the authorities.”
