India, August 12, 2023 – In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through Jadavpur University, a former student has been apprehended in connection with the tragic death of 18-year-old undergraduate, Swapnadip Kundu. The incident occurred within the premises of the university’s main hostel, leading to renewed concerns about student safety and the practice of ragging on campus.
Sourabh Chowdhury, an MSc Mathematics graduate from Jadavpur University in 2022, was taken into custody after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed by Swapnadip Kundu’s father, Ramprasad Kundu. The father’s complaint implicated several hostel residents, including Chowdhury, in the events leading up to his son’s untimely demise. Police have initiated legal proceedings under section 302/34 IPC, indicating a serious investigation into the matter.
Late on Wednesday night, Swapnadip Kundu, a freshman from Bagula in the Nadia district, fell from the second-floor balcony of the main hostel building, tragically losing his life. Despite immediate medical attention, Kundu succumbed to severe head injuries, as well as fractures to his rib and pelvis, caused by the impact of the fall.
The incident has prompted both sorrow and outrage, prompting West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose to personally visit the Jadavpur University Hostel. In an effort to address the concerns of the students and faculty, the Governor pledged a commitment to justice, emphasizing that strong action will be taken against those responsible. Governor Bose conveyed his heartfelt condolences and assured that the fundamental issues raised by the students would be addressed with utmost sincerity.
In the wake of this tragedy, a comprehensive ten-member inquiry committee has been dispatched to the Jadavpur University Hostel to meticulously probe the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event. The committee aims to uncover the full details and underlying causes that led to this grievous incident.
The deceased, Swapnadip Kundu, was a first-year student in the Bengali Department and hailed from Nadia district. His promising future was cut short in this tragic accident that has left the entire university community in mourning.
